Ellenor Owen Shannon was born on 12 August 1899, in Macon, Mississippi to William Washington and Ellen (Owen) Shannon. She received her bachelor's degree from Tulane University in 1923 and her master's from Columbia University. She taught at Mississippi State College for Women in Jackson. She was a faculty member in the English Department at Denison University, Granville, Ohio from 1938 until 1964, attaining the rank of Associate Professor. She returned to Mississippi to teach at Delta State College in Cleveland until retiring. She died at the age of 90 on 28 December 1989 in Macon and was buried there in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.
