Siamese Monarch. He reigned as king of Siam (now Thailand) from 1868 to 1910. He was only 15 when his father, King Rama IV Mongkut, died; he co-ruled in a Regency period until October 16, 1873 when he was crowned King of Siam. Chulalongkorn was considered a great king, a modernizer and reformer who anticipated Siam becoming a democratic constitutional monarchy. He abolished serfdom and involuntary servitude. He built schools, roads, and railroads. Although he ceded some territory to the British and the French,he kept his kingdom independant of the Colonial powers of his time. Today he is highly regarded in Thailand.A devout Buddhist, he built some of the magnificent Buddhist Temples one can see today in Bangkok and around Thailand. According to Buddhist custom, he was cremated and his remains where placed in a spire (chedi) in the royal burial ground near the Temple, Wat Ratchabophit in Bangkok.
