Rev. Gene Auxier, 83, of Belle Rive, died 12:45 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Sunday, Dec. 23, 1928, in Dahlgren, son of George R. and Lora F. (Turner) Auxier. He married Daphne Tucker on April 16, 1948, in Mt. Vernon.
Rev. Auxier pastored several churches in Illinois over his 60 years as a Baptist Minister, including: Antioch, Pleasant Hill, Laird, New Hope in Dahlgren, Ina, Bluford, Zion Hill, Paradise Prairie, Ramsey, East Salem, Emmanuel of Sterling, Woodlawn, Rend City and Liberty. He also served as an Associational Missionary in Salem South and Fairfield associations and was currently a member of Belle River Missionary Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Daphne Auxier of Belle Rive; daughter, Diane Zillges and husband Larry of Opdyke; daughter-in-law. Linda Auxier Lemay of Carterville; grandchildren, Dawn Hamson and husband Rev. Jeremy of Belle Rive, Rev. Phillip Auxier and wife Meghan of Hutchison, Kan., Holly Hendricks and husband Tod of Carterville, Jodi Pressgrove and husband Ryan of Belle Rive and Clint Auxier of St. Louis, Mo.; great-grandchildren, Maggie and Noah Hamson, Riley and Rilan Pressgrove, Andrew, Gabriel, Lauren and Caleb Auxier, Leah Bissey, Anna and Ethan Hendricks and Tyler Pinkerton; sisters-in-law, Jessie Burkhead of Mt. Vernon, Mary Auxier of Centralia, Phylis Tucker of Dahlgren and Rosemary Tucker of Mt. Vernon; brother-in-law, J.A. Tucker and wife Jean of Mt. Vernon; special family friend, Amy Auxier; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Roger Auxier at birth and Rev., Rick Auxier; brothers, Rev. William Auxier, George Auxier, Jr. and Donald Auxier; sister-in-law, Elsie Auxier; and brothers-in-law, Lester Richardson, Jack Reynolds and Don Tucker.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Jeremy Hamson, the Rev. Phillip Auxier and the Rev. Kenneth Holland officiating. Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Jefferson County.
Visitation will be held 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at Hughey Funeral Home.
