Elijah Abel [or Able] was born into slavery on July 25, 1810 in Maryland the son of Delilah and Andrew Abel. It is believed that he used the underground railway to escape from slavery by traveling to Canada.
In September of 1832 Elijah was baptized into the LDS Church by Ezekiel Roberts. He was married to Mary Ann Adams.
It appears from certificates that he was ordained an Elder in the Melchezedek priesthood on March 3, 1836 perhaps under the hands of the Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith.
On December 30, 1836 he was ordained a Seventy by Zebedee Coltrin and became a "duly licensed minister of the Gospel" (according to Joseph F. Smith Elijah was also ordained later as a High Priest). As a Seventy he later served missions in New York and Canada.
In 1839 Elijah was made a member of the Third Quorum of the Seventy [a leadership quorum of the Church]. At the request of Joseph Smith he worked as a mortician in Nauvoo. In 1843 he was called to serve another mission for the Church.
After his arrival in Salt Lake City he became a resident of the Tenth Ward, and together with his wife he managed the Farnham Hotel. A carpenter by trade he worked on the building the Salt Lake Temple.
In 1853 however because of the priesthood restriction Elijah Abel was not allowed to receive his own temple endowment.
In Nauvoo he was intimately acquainted with the Prophet Joseph Smith and later in life was the special friend of Levi W. Hancock. In 1883, as a member of the Third Quorum of Seventy, he left Salt Lake City on his final mission to Canada during which time he also performed missionary labors in the United States. Two weeks after his return home he died December 25, 1884 of debility, consequent upon exposure while laboring in the ministry in Ohio; a martyr to the cause.
He died as his obituary stated "in full faith of the gospel of Jesus Christ."(see, LDS Historical Record 3:577)
