Karen "Carrie" Torkelson was born in Norway, she came to the U.S. as a young girl with her parents Odin and Anna Torkelson, she was the oldest of seven siblings.
After the death of her beloved father Odin, Karen took on the responsibilities of head of the house, not only was she the breadwinner, but she helped her mother raise her younger siblings. She rented rooms and also worked as a secretary for an insurance company while living in Iowa.
Karen married Charles Philpott in Des Moines, Iowa and they later moved to Los Angeles where they had two daughters, Ramona and Maurine. Charles died and left her a young widow. She went to work for the company he helped found, Los Angeles Slide Company and worked as their bookkeeper/secretary for many years.
We used to bring her one Pabst Blue Ribbon beer on Sundays.
