At 6 o'clock yesterday morning [31 May], Mrs. Melvina H. Arnold, of Cheyenne, died at Kenosha Wis., of dropsy in the chest, from which complaint she had suffered severely the past year, during which time she has been trying the efficacy of mineral springs at Kenosha, and undergone several operations, giving temporary relief. Her husband, who had received tidings of her critical condition, left the city last week and arrived by the bedside of his wife before her life had passed away.

Mrs. Arnold was a lady of rare intelligence, and had received a classical education, which she profited by. Her knowledge of literature embraced the best productions of ancie3nt and modern times, and her chief pleasure was in the society of books. Those who enjoyed an intimate acquaintance with the deceased always mentioned her in the highest terms, and her death will be sincerely mourned.

Owing to her superior education she was appointed superintendent of public schools in Cheyenne's early days, which position she filled with credit to herself and benefit to the county. The salary that she received for this service was wisely invested in business property on Eddy Street, which subsequently afforded her a nice little income.

She was a woman who cared nothing for the frivolities or fashions of the day, but pursued the even tenor of her way, living her own life, true to herself and her family, courting neither society nor caring for its plaudits. In this and other respects she was remarkable. She was fondly loved by her two sons, one [John T. Arnold] of whom is making a brilliant record at the naval academy at Annapolis, Maryland.
