Christopher was born the son of Waitman Richards and Sarah "Sally" Hodges. Waitman's family lived about 6 miles south east of Rocky Mount in Franklin County Virginia [between Sydnorsville and Sontag]. Waitman's father had established a large plantation there in 1758.

Christopher married Nancy Adeline Moore, daughter of Jacob Moore and Frances Shuffield; on February 9 1826 in Franklin County, and raised their family there.
