When Clifton's father died at a young age, his uncle, Osias Elmer, came to WI and took Clifton back to New York, where he was raised by his aunt and uncle. Clifton never saw his mother again.
He went on to marry Ada Zufelt in Oct of 1880 in New York. Many years later, following the death of Ada, Clifton returned to Wisconsin and reunited with his brother.
Following the death of his brother, John DeElton Elmer, Clifton married his widow, Eldora (Harris) Elmer.
Mattie, the youngest daughter of John DeElton Elmer and Eldora (Harris) Elmer, was married to Herbert Dieter with whom she had the following children:
- Joyce Dieter
- June M Dieter
- William C Dieter
Clifton never had any children of his own.
