Appointed to West Point July 1, 1873; graduated to commission as 2nd Lt on June 15, 1877. After waiting six months for assignment, he served garrison duty with the 3rd Artillery at Ft. Hamilton, NY through August 2, 1879. He then served as Professor of Military Science, University of the State of Missouri until Sept 1, 1882 when he resigned his commission.
He became a counselor at Law in his home town of St. Louis, Missouri through 1887, and thereafter at Muskogee Technical Institute. Civil History. He served as an attorney at Law, Chicago, Illinois and studied law at Columbia College, New York City, 1878 and 1879, and earned an LL.B. at the State University of Missouri, 1881, as well as a degree in medicine from the same institution on the same date. He was a Lecturer of Medical Jurisprudence, Harvey Medical College, Chicago, 1900 to 1905. He authored various legal monographs, among them: Dissolution of National Banks, Review of Dreyfus Case, Common Law of Conspiracy, etc. He retired from active practice of law on account of ill‑health in 1905 and after engaged in mining as president and general counsel of Nelson Gulch Mining Co., of Alaska, and of La Fidelidad, Inc. of New Mexico. He was also Vice President of Consolidated Copper Creek Mining Co. of Arizona.
