Gene Thompson was born in Worthington, Minnesota. He moved to Modesto at the age of two and spent his life in this valley town. He graduated from Modesto High School and Modesto Junior College. He was married to Elaine Crow for fifty-two years until her death in 1996 and was a loving father of four. Gene was an independent and self-made man of many talents. He had a wry sense of humor and was compassionate in a quiet way, often helping others in need.

Gene was an accomplished aviator and a proud B-17 Captain with the Air Corps during World War II. He loved cars and creating innovative and aesthetic home improvement projects. Gene was a successful Modesto businessman and was in the car sales, manufacturing and real estate businesses. He skied, enjoyed constant renovations at the Cold Springs and Donner Lake houses, liked drinking wine and travelled extensively to Mexico and Europe. Later in life he surprisingly took up yoga in addition to his unfailing six day a week health club workout.

Following the death of Elaine, he married Gwenn Graham, and together they shared nine happy years of travel and companionship.

Gene was also preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Rose Thompson, his older brother, Oliver Burdean Thompson, and his eldest son, Gene Jr.

He is survived by Gwenn; his children, Shel (Marie-Merced) Thompson, Melissa (Mike) Lindell, Melanie (John) Curtis; and daughter-in-law, Sue Thompson; step-children, Jeff (Theresa) Graham and Kendall (David) Brightwell; his grandchildren, Sean (Kristen), Christina (Jeremy), Romy (Lauren), Skye, Suzanne, John, Tim, Mattea, Wyatt, Steve (Christine), Wendy (Jeremy), Mitchell and Lily; and great grandchildren, Trevor, Mimi, Maya, Alex and Karly. Gene was one of a kind, we will miss his originality as well as his role as family patriarch.

A service will be held on Thursday July 5th at Wellspring Anglican Church, 820 H Street, Modesto, California, followed by internment at Lakewood Cemetary, 900 Santa Fe Avenue, Hughson, California 95326.
