CLARENCE MASON BANCROFT (10) As a child, Clarence dearly loved the railroad and would wave to the engineers on the passing trains. At times,they would stop and let him ride in the cab while they were switching cars, etc. He followed in his father's footsteps as a railroad man, but he worked as an engineer. He was born on November 27, 1911 in Stockton ,. the youngest child of Flora Mae and George Bancroft. While he was young, he made frequent trips to the desert to visit his father at work for the railroad, but on several occasions he had to return to Woodbridge because the desert climate did not agree with him, and ultimately he was brought back to stay at the ranch while his mother would visit with his father.As a young man, Clarence had a serious accident in which he was riding a motorcycle and was hit by an automobile at a street intersection and was left for dead. Needless to say, he recovered. Clarence graduated from Lodi High School, then worked on the railroad. having to learn on the narrow gauge lines before he could find work with the standard railroadlines. He worked for Western Pacific and was the first licensed engineer to head up diesel passenger service in California. He studied at the Oakland Chiropractic School and practiced that profession for a while,then returned to his favorite railroad work. He married Alice Ladd of Stockton on June 26, 1939 and became the father of two sons Clarence Raymond and Alan Mason. The marriage ended in divorce. Clarence was a member of the Woodbridge Masonic Lodge. He died on March 15, 1969 in Quincy. California at the age of 57 and is buried in the Lodi Memorial Cemetery.
