A prominent, popular Mount Union physician, Dr. Fred H. McClain Jr., who, along with his father and grandfather, had provided medical care to area residents for nearly nine decades, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 1989.
Funeral services were held Oct. 14 at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union. The Rev. Scott McKenzie officiated. Interment was made in Mount Union Cemetery.
Dr. McClain, 68, became ill while working at the Mount Union Medical Center and was taken to J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, where he was pronounced dead at 4:25 p.m.
Born in Mount Union on Dec. 6, 1920, he was the son of the late Nannie (Gifford) and Dr. Fred H. McClain Sr. He was united in marriage with the former Elma B. Locke on Nov. 25, 1943, at the First United Methodist Church, Mount Union.
Surviving are his wife, at their home at 121 W. Shirley St., Mount Union; two sons, Fred L. McClain of Rockhill Furnace and Frank H. McClain of Churchville, N.Y.; four grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Norman (Nancy) Snook of Lincoln, Ohio, and Mrs. Jerald (Margaret) Frailey, Lancaster.
A brother, Richard, preceded him in death.
A third generation physician, Dr. McClain followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Dr. C.A.R. McClain, who began practicing medicine in Mount Union in 1903, and father, Dr. Fred H. McClain Sr.
"Dr. Fred"as he was familiarly known in the community, practiced in his hometown from 1947 until his retirement in December 1987,
McClain graduated from Mount Union High School in 1937, Juniata College in 1941, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1944. He served his internship at Allentown Hospital. He then served the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was honorably discharged, with the rank of captain, in 1947.
From 1947, when he joined his father in Mount Union, until 1982. McClain served on the active staff at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, and as a courtesy, and later honorary, staff at the Lewistown Hospital.
He served on the Mount Union School District's Board of Education from 1961 to 1967 and was a director of the Central National Bank, Mount Union, until it's merger in 1965, then became a member of the advisory board of the Mount Union Penn Central National Bank.
Dr. McClain was a member of the Huntingdon County Medical Society and served it as president (1952 and 1963) and treasurer (1978-84). He had been the physician for the Mount Union Schools' Athletic teams since 1961 and was clinician of the Pennsylvania Department of Health's Well-Baby Clinic in Mount Union for 25 years.
McClain was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mount Union, where he had been a trustee. He was also a member of the Mount Union Art Guild and the Board of Directors of Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia. Honored as the Citizen of the Year for 1978 by the St. Catherine of Sienna Council No., 16106, Knights of Columbus of Mount Union, Dr. McClain is also a member of Mount Union Lodge No. 688, F&AM; Mount Union Chamber of Commerce; Simpson-Hunt Post 107, American Legion, Mount Union; and was an honorary member of the Mount Union Fire Company. He had served on the board of directors for the Shirley Home for the Aged.
