Businessman. Known as "The Pineapple King of Hawaii", he came to the islands in 1899, and purchased 61 acres of land in Wahiawa, Oahu. The establishment of his first plantation marked the beginning of the Hawaiian pineapple industry. In 1907 it was moved to Honolulu for business reasons, and stayed in operation until 1991. He would later purchase the island of Lanai and convert it from a dry, sparsely inhabited island to the largest pineapple plantation anywhere in the world. At one time, Lanai supported 75% of the world's pineapple supplies. The 'Dole' brand is now one of the most recognized brands in the world today. Inscribed on his gravestone are the words, "He was a Man, Take Him All in All. I Shall Not Look Upon His Like Again." Sanford Ballard Dole, who took part in the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom, was his cousin.
