From as far back as I can remember, Diane never met a stranger. She was a friendly, outgoing lady with a winning smile that early in life garnered her the nickname of "Dimples". Diane was highly intelligent (valedictorian of her high school class) but made an error when she was about 13-years-old that I wish to share, feeling confident that Diane herself would smile on my sharing of this story.
Our mother never allowed us children in the kitchen when she was fixing meals, so we never saw food being prepared. Diane begged mother relentlessly to allow her to bake a cake without my mother's supervision. Mother finally relented, but ran panicked into the kitchen shortly after Diane started to mix her cake, because of the loud noises originating from the kitchen. The recipe had called for 2 whole eggs, and Diane had complied with adding two whole eggs--shells and all! I share this story for anyone who has had a bad experience in the kitchen, because you should know, there is hope for us all. Diane went on to become a very dedicated and excellent dietitian. I still use some of her wonderful recipes, and especially like the one for chocolate fudge.
Diane joined the Greece Volunteer Ambulance Service so she could help others. Even when she was in high school, she obtained her Red Cross badge for being a lifeguard during the summer months. Maybe her being the oldest of four children gave her a sense of looking out for others, but I know personally that her lifesaving began quite early in life. When she was about 11, Mother had allowed the four of us to take our ice skates and walk to Hoover Lake. Wishing to make the trip a little shorter, we walked across the ice to the area we wanted to put on our skates. Although the ice was solid all along the away, when we got to out destination the ice was a distance from the ground on the other side. My brother and sister jumped to the other side without incident. Diane held tightly to my hand while we jumped, but when I failed to make it to the other side, I took her under water with me. Diane held my head above water, while telling my brother to lie on his stomach to pull us out, and she pulled me out with her. It was a long and cold walk home, but I was the first person Diane saved.
She had an experience a few months before her death, where she was unable to save a man who had been hurt in an accident, and this was depressing to her. She shared that the best experience she had as a volunteer for the Greece Volunteer Ambulance Service was shortly thereafter when she actually delivered a baby! Her untimely demise occurred only months after this. It was surprising to me to learn that she and our brother shared the same favorite singer, and the same favorite song-- Neil Diamond singing "Holly Holy".
