The son of William & Alice (Cosgrove) Werdebaugh, in 1850 he lived with his family in Montgomery Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, he was a coachsmith presumably still living in Montgomery Township, Franklin County, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 10" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Mercersburg, Franklin County, August 2, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9 as a private with Co. C, 126th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 20, 1863. He also enlisted in Chambersburg September 1, 1864, and mustered into federal service there September 7 as a private with Co. G, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa). He transferred to Co. K, date unknown, and honorably discharged per general order June 16, 1865, at Cloud's Mills, Virginia.

He married Mary E. lnu. in 1895 and reportedly died from "arteriosclerosis."
