James Earl Adkins, 52, of Decatur, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, from injuries sustained in a trucking accident in Rogersville after he tried to save the lives of two other people.

A son of the late Charles Bud and Hazel Denton Adkins, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving two tours of duty in Vietnam and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and other military honors. A member of Masonic Lodge No. 213, he was an active member of the National Guard. He was a member of Decatur United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Windy Louise Adkins of Decatur; one half-brother, Jimmy Ricker of Decatur; one granddaughter, Lauren S. Adkins; cousins, Carol and Jane Roberts; and a special friend, Peggy Conner, and her family.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home with the Rev. Milan Deckish and the Rev. Mike Ogle officiating. Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery with honors.

A military honor guard will serve as pallbearers and members of Masonic Lodge No. 213 will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A Masonic Service will be held at 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Crippled Childrens Association.
