Ellen A. Armstrong, Born October 16, 1844 in Farmington married first Mr. Brown - I've found no record of that marriage, but the Illinois Statewide Marriage Records from 1888 indicates Mrs. Ellen Brown and Samuel Jack - so she was married to Mr. Brown first - so why does the top of her tombstone list her name as Brown - and wife of Samuel Jack on the front?
Other researchers attribute at least three children to Samuel and Ellen, but I disagree. Based upon the birth dates of his children, I don't believe Samuel and Ellen had any children, though Ellen had a hand in raising his children, due to the untimely deaths of his first two wives and their young ages.
Children of Catharine Ann Christy (1842-1872) & Samuel Jack (married 1860):
Matilda Jack - 1861-1955 - wife of Edward B. Montgomery.
Matthew Porter Jack - 1863-1864
Porter Jack - 1867-____ - husband of Matilda unknown.
Children of Elizabeth Ramsey "Lizzie" Campbell (1845-1883) & Samuel Jack (married 1874):
Lydia Jack - 1875-1858 wife of Frank Lincoln Steenburg
Maude Jack - 1880-____
Elizabeth Jack - 1883-____.
and finally Ellen Armstrong Brown, married 1888. All children except for Matilda the eldest were born in/around Farmington, Fulton County, Illinois. Matilda was born in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania.
