Marie Shumate Atkins, 88, of 908 Spruce St., Martinsville, died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Green Sulphur Springs, W.Va., on April 16, 1917, to Henry Alexander Shumate and Myrtle Daubenspeck Shumate. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, B.I. Atkins; two sisters, Fern Gwinn and Gladys Hill; and a brother, Ross Shumate.

She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church and Order of The Eastern Star.

Surviving are a sister, Ila Clark of Bluefield; a brother, Charles Henry Shumate of Newton Falls, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at McKee-Stone Funeral chapel with Pastor Carl Keith officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
