She died at the Masonic Home of New Jersey.

She was born to Frank T. and Lydia A. Wardell (Johnson). The family moved to Bay Head when Elsie was an infant. She lived in Bay Head for the next fifty-one years before moving to back to Point Pleasant.

Elsie attended Bay Head Grammar School and graduated from Point Pleasant Beach High School in 1943. She also studied piano and organ for many years with several area teachers.

Elsie and her childhood sweetheart, Harold C. Applegate, Sr., were married on June 22, 1946 at her parents home on Main Avenue in Bay Head. She was a seventy-five year member of the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church and belonged to Faith Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star for over sixty years.

Surviving were her children, Cynthia A. Holst (Richard) of Barnegat and Harold C. Applegate, Jr. (Nancy) of Toms River. Also left to cherish her memory were five grandchildren, Melissa H. Golden, Lydia A. Pokler (Michael), Richard W. Holst (Stacy), Dawn E. Applegate, and Randall Young; and five great-grandchildren, Bridget Elise Golden, John Patrick "Jack" Golden, twins, Richard Harold Holst and Alexandra Karyn Holst, and Baby Girl Pokler who will be born in May. Other surviving family members included a brother-in-law, John Forman Applegate; and two sisters-in-law, Sara E. (Bette) Wardell and Dolores G. Applegate. There was also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and several dear friends.
