I was a bit apprehensive, I already had a cat and he was the alpha male of all alpha males. We kept our fingers crossed... luckily, they were compatible, although Blackula did like to chase her on occasion.
B.B. was a "velcro cat": following me like a dog, on my lap, sleeping on my chest at night. Fortunately, she was a very small cat (4 lbs., down to 2.5 lbs. at the end) so she could get away with it. She was a loving and devoted kitty. All she wanted was to be loved.
On the evening of December 16, 2011, my husband made a fire in the fireplace. She had her "kitty kup" placed by it, and one of her favorite things to do was to snuggle in close for the warmth. When I came in from work around 7:00 p.m., she was still in her basket and didn't come to greet me as she usually did. I gently petted her, but there was no response, and her breathing was rapid and shallow - she had already slipped into a coma. I sat up with her, telling her how much she was loved, and that it was alright to leave. She died in her sleep around 3:00 a.m. without regaining consciousness, at 20 years of age.
I miss my little B.B. every single day.
Note: As B.B. had an unusual name, this is the origination of it: She had a prominent underbite, and when you gently rubbed underneath her chin, it stuck out even further. My husband and I remembered a beer commercial where the actor adopted an expression over his distate for "bitter beer," it looked so similar to B.B. that we adopted the name for her. :)
