OBITUARY
[Houston Herald, Houston, Missouri, March 12, 1909]
"Died- Wednesday of last week at his home about three miles east of Raymondville, Mr. Charles Gartin. Mr. Gartin had a stroke pf paralysis several years ago, from which he never recovered. He had been confined to his bed for several months, and his death was no surprise to his family. Mr. Gartin, at the time of his death, was past 84 years old. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, and was well liked by all who knew him.
He leaves an aged wife and several children to mourn his loss.
The remains were laid to rest in the Allen Graveyard Friday at 11 a.m. Revs Trautman and Baker conducted the funeral services. The family has the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement."

Charles Gartin was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted 14 December 1861 at Davenport, Iowa, for three years with Company "C", 13th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He served in various places such as Shilo, Tennessee and Vicksburg, Mississippi. He also guarded prisoners from Vicksburg on river boats to Cairo, Illinois. He was discharged November 1, 1864, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
He had been married twice previously, first to Anna Seward, February 27, 1845, in Bartholomew County, Indiana. She died in Lucas County, Iowa in 1863. He married secondly to Sarah Ann Riggle, March 14, 1865, in Chariton, Lucas County, Iowa. She died April 11, 1873, in Lucas County, Iowa.
