Port Washington lost one of its strongest supporters when Edward C. Adams, who was involved in numerous community and civic organizations, died from complications of a heart attack Tuesday, March 18, at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Mequon.
Mr. Adams lived at 327 E. James Drive, Port Washington. He was 85.
“I think a lot of people in town know my father from being in various city organizations. He served the City of Port Washington well,” his daughter Alice Lippe said.
“He has been active in education all his life, not only for his children but for the welfare of all children.”
“He had a very good sense of humor, was a great storyteller and liked a good story.”
Mr. Adams will be missed at Harry’s Restaurant in Port Washington, where he had breakfast every morning.
He is probably best known as the business manager for the Port Washington-Saukville School District for 17 years, from 1968 until he retired in 1985.
He was also a math teacher in the district from 1952 until 1957, when he left for a 10 year career at AC Delco in Oak Creek, where he was involved in research and development of the Apollo Moon Project.
Mr. Adam was born Jan. 7, 1023, in North Fond du Lac, the son of Earl and Leanilda Possley Adams.
He graduated in 1941 for North Fond du Lac High School.
A retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, Mr. Adams was a meteorologist in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II in the China Burma India Theatre.
After the war, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.
On April 27, 1946, he married Marjorie Manthei in North Fond du Lac.
Mr. Adams taught in the Niagara School District prior to coming to Port Washington in 1952.
His civic commitments included stints on the Port Washington Harbor Commission, Port Washington-Saukville School Board and Ozaukee County Commission on Aging.
He was a member of St. Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church, Port Washington Rotary Club, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Milwaukee and Manitowoc Civil War Round Table, Ozaukee County Retired Educators and the Port Washington Kiwanis Club.
Mr. Adams is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Port Washington and five daughters, Alice (Robert) Lippe of Cedarburg, Margaret Adams and Janet (Michael) Trzecinski, both of Port Washington, Nancy (Paul Clausing) Adams of Durham, N.C., and Carol (Jeffrey) Fritsche of Silverton, Oregon.
He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Jill Marshall, Monica Larkin, Rebecca Kuss, Emily Schultz, Joseph Clausing, Michelle Trzecinski and Kristin and Jessica Fritsche; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, James of Mayville and David of Fond du Lac.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, at St. Peter Alcantara Catholic Church in Port Washington. Father Patrick Wendt will officiate.
Visitation will be at the church from 3 p.m. until the Mass. Entombment will be in St. Mary’s Mausoleum, Port Washington.
Memorials to the Port Washington Food Pantry or a charity of the donor’s choice are suggested.
