Esther Brisben (or Brisbane) of Sunbury, Pennsylvania was the daughter of James C. Brisben (burial unknown) and Amelia S. Belles (Find a Grave #101580744). (History of Northumberland County, Bell 1891, page 808). She was the grand daughter of Dr. James Brisben (Find A Grave Memorial# 39468808). She met and married Franklin B. Gowen in about 1860. They probably met when Franklin Gowen was in the Northumberland County area. Gowen had been sent by his father to work as a merchant apprentice for Thomas Baumgardner (Find A Grave Memorial # 34550078) in Lancaster in about 1849. Baumgardner continued the relationship, introducing Gowen to the coal business. Later Gowen was sent to Shamokin to manage an iron furnace, where he probably met Esther.
