Born and raised on the family farm, Echo was the second of five children born to Carl and Hazel Halderson Price. As valedictorian of Holmen High School Class of 1941, her teachers convinced her father to send her to the University of Wisconsin. She went on to earn her Masters Degree in Nutrition and Biochemistry at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
Echo was teaching at Louisiana State University when she met Frank Cheely, her husband of 54 years and the love of her life. She claimed she knew he was the one she would marry after the first time she met him. Frank's career as a chemical engineer required frequent moves over the next 20 years. The family lived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Allentown and Berwyn, Pennsylvania; Mountain Lakes, New Jersey; and Houston, Texas. With each transfer Echo devoted herself to creating a beautiful home, a happy transition for her children, and becoming an active part of the community.
In 1974, Frank and Echo settled in Bellville where she was an antique dealer and the owner of Echo Antiques. Echo and Frank were active in many community groups including the Bellville Historical Society, the Bellville Public Library and St. John Lutheran Church. Echo enjoyed performing, and she will be remembered for her many, often hilarious, roles in Little Country Theater productions, for her book reviews, and for her wry sense of humor.
Echo was preceded in death by her husband, Joel Frank Cheely; by her parents; and by her brother, Robert Price.
She is survived by her sisters, Mae Larsen and Carol Olson, and her brother, James Price. Echo is survived by her daughter, Karen Pernell, and son-in-law, David Pernell, of Austin, Texas, and by her son, Joel Frank Cheely, Jr. of Manlius, New York. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Kim, Mallory, and Dylan, and many nephews and nieces and other loving relatives and friends.
Visitation is scheduled from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM on Sunday, December 26, 2010, at Knesek Bros. Funeral Chapel, 842 E Main, Bellville, Texas. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, December 27, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church, 520 North Holland, Bellville, Texas.
