Ambrose was the son of Michel Allain and Marie "Felicite" Allaire. He married Aurelie' Chayer, daughter of Michael Chayer and Celeste Fortier, on 24 Oct 1848 in St. Georges de Henryville, Iberville, Quebec.

Fifteen children were born to this marriage: Francois Allain (1849 – 1849), Matilda Allain Reeves (1850-1937), Ambrose E. Allain Jr. (1852- 1934), Godfroi Allain (1854-1854), Godfrey Allain (1855-1944), Francois Xavier Allain (1857-1890), Julia Allain Faucher (1859-1925), Oliver Allain (1860-1936), Angeline Allain Longbottom (1862-1942), Theophilus Allain (1864-1943), Leddie "Ida" Allain Greenwood Boudreau (1866-1962), Henri Eugene Allain (1868-1941), Edwin Harvey Allain (1870-1053), Emile "Alvin" Allain (1872-1961), and Julie Allain (1885-1885).
