A last "goodbye" to Officer Kevin Ambrose Fallen hero laid to rest
Updated: Friday, 08 Jun 2012, 3:20 PM EDT Published : Friday, 08 Jun 2012, 1:47 PM EDT News 22 - WWLP
Anthony Fay SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - With a 21-gun salute, the playing of "Taps," and the sounding of his cruiser's siren for the final time, Officer Kevin Ambrose was laid to rest Friday afternoon.
After a solemn funeral Mass, a long, marching procession of officers departed from the St. Catherine of Siena Church to Hillcrest Park Cemetery, which will be Officer Ambrose 's final resting place.
Marching bagpipers played the standard "Scotland the Brave" as crowds lined Parker Street to salute Springfield's fallen hero for the final time.
The marchers passed under a Giant American Flag draped over Parker Street, with the help of two Springfield Fire Department ladder trucks.
Then, thousands of mourners filed into Hillcrest Park Cemetery for the burial and final salute to this fallen hero.
During the ceremony, the fallen officer was given a 21-gun salute, before the American Flag was presented to the fallen officer's family. Then, the siren on Officer Ambrose's cruiser sounded for the final time; before Springfield police officers filed in one by one and removed their gloves in a sign of remembrance.
Earlier, at Officer Ambrose's funeral, Springfield Bishop Timothy McDonnell said that Ambrose's passing should not be referred to as a "farewell," but rather, as a "goodbye."
"They tell us that ‘goodbye' is really a contraction of ‘God be with you,' and implicit in it, ‘until we meet again.' So when we say goodbye; we say ‘God be with you, until we meet again,' because one day, we shall," McDonnell said.
