Herbert Barneke, aged 15 years,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Barneke of
Blue Hill, met with a tragic death
while bathing in the St. Francis river
on Sunday. The particulars of the
case as received from Coroner Trumbull
are as follows:
Herbert, his brother Arthur, and
other boys went to the river to bathe
on Sunday afternoon and, upon
entering the water, Herbert swam up
stream while his companions took the
opposite course. When the latter re-
turned a short time after to the place
from whence they started they could
find no trace of Herbert and some of
them commenced a search for him
while others ran to summon help.
Several people were soon on the spot
and lost no time in searching the
river. It was not, however, until 3
o'clock—half an hour after the boy
was missed—that he was discovered
by Charles Groff and Philip Boehm
at the bottom of a deep hole and
pulled out by them. Although every
means were resorted to in an effort
to resuscitate the boy they proved
futile. It is supposed that death
resulted from cramps.

He is survived by parents: Frederick
and Bessie Johnson Borneke. Brother
Arthur and sister Mabel.

Funeral services were held at the
family residence on Tuesday morning
at 10 o'clock, Rev. Tracy officiating,
and the burial was in the Galbraith.
