My Grandmother, Jessie Ruth Arnold Hensley was the daughter of E.B. and Amanda Dykes Arnold. She was born in Hawkins County, right on the border of Sullivan County.

As she grew up, in a household of sisters, she was taught all the things a young lady needed to know, from raising your own food, to how to properly set a table. Most of these she tried to pass on to me, succeeding in some.

She married Earl Clyde Hensley, son of Elijah and Mary Agnes (Mollie) Monteith Hensley. Together they raised a family of four children, two sons and two daughters, losing one son in 1934. their children are, Mildred Hensley Carr, B. L. Hensley, Madge Hensley Brown and William Jack Hensley, Infant son Benjamin Elijah.

Granny, (as I always called her) was a phenomenal cook. Her house was always filled with delicious aromas to tantalize even the most finicky (Me) eaters. Granny didn't have recipe books, she didn't need them. She made the best pies and cakes I've ever eaten. All of her culinary knowledge was kept in her head.

She was also an excellent seamstress. When I was small, I remember her working at a "Dressmaking" plant in Greeneville.
She never used patterns, she made her own. I was always decked out in style.

Granny was a loving Mother to her children, fiercely loyal. As her grandchild, I knew I was special. She was so proud of her grandchildren, everything we did was "Brilliant", she even gave me a Blue Ribbon once for the "Best Mud Pie" ever. I was so proud.

Granny enjoyed life, she saw the beauty in the ordinary, and the beauty was in her. We were all blessed to be loved by her. She will always be loved and missed.
