PATRICK BURKE PASSED AWAY
Word was received from Lisbon Friday of the death of an old time resident of Jamestown and Stutsman county. Patrick Burke, who answered the last call at the North Dakota Soldier’s Home at 2 o’clock this morning. He was 78 years old. Death was due to the infirmities of his advanced age. Patrick Burke was a well-known character in this vicinity, a veteran of the Civil war, a member of Fort Seward post, G. A. R., had farmed near Buchanan for many years and also resided at Jamestown for some time. The last few years he spent at the Lisbon Soldier’s Home and in New Jersey.
Patrick Burke was born in Wicklow, Ireland, in 1837. In 1853 he came to the United States and for some time lived in New Jersey, later going west and settling in Wisconsin. He joined Company K of the Thirty-second Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry as a private and served three years during the Civil war, being in many important engagements. In 1880 he came to North Dakota, settling upon the Burke farm near Buchanan, where he resided with the family for several years and later removed to Jamestown, where his genial nature and friendly character made him many staunch friends. He was a loyal member of St. James Catholic church and donated the sanctuary lamp in the new building.
Patrick Burke is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ellen Cahill of New Rockford, Mrs. Elizabeth Ridley, Greenfield, Mo., and Mrs. Jennie Smith, Bozeman, Mont., and two sons, Edward of Wolf Creek, Mont., and James Burke of Jamestown. Their mother passed away three years ago.
