William Woodson Jackman d.at 52; was a tanner by trade, per 1879 Census, as was his father before him and who owned/operated a tan yard. The leather was used to make many shoes before they were "store bought" when the manufacturing companies began producing them for retail sales. Maybe that's why the 1880 Census lists him as being a farmer, his tannery becoming obsolete as industrialization replaced hand-made goods.

Marriage-20 Dec 1866:
Name: William W Jackman; Male; Birth: KY
Spouse: Arrania Basham; Birth: 1844 KY

Arrania's Parents:
Nathan Basham [1815-1891]
Mahala Preston [1815-1887]
--------------------------------------------

OBITUARY:
Mr. William Jackman, Jr, died suddenly at his home in the Oil City country Monday evening last, about 4 o'clock. The news of his decease shocked the entire community as he was everywhere regarded as one of the stoutest, most athletic men in the county. His death was caused by heart-trouble, and came almost without premonition. "Bill" Jackman, as he was familiarly known among his acquain- tenances, was one of the truest, most courageous of men. For a friend he would unhesitatingly risk his life: with his enemies he was open as the day. He was a hard-working, clever man, and will be most sincerely regretted by those who knew him best. The remains were interred in the Basham* grave yard, in the Glasgow Junction country, yester- day. (*Shipley aka Jackman)
