James Beatty enlisted in the Co. "A" of the Independent Loudoun Virginia Rangers (USA) on June 20, 1862, at Waterford, Va. The Loudoun Rangers, a scouting and cavalry unit, were the only Union command raised in Confederate Virginia. On October 18,1863, he was wounded and captured by Confederate forces at Charles Town, WVa., and was confined at Libby and Belle Isle prisons in Richmond, Va. He was paroled and exchanged on Dec. 28, 1863, at City Point, Va. He was again captured at Waterford on May 17, 1864, but escaped. He was mustered out with the rest of his unit on May 31, 1865, at Bolivar, WVa.

He married Betty J. Broughton in 1868 at Odell, Ill.
