Travelling with his mother Maria Antonia and his brother John, Francis Baratta came to this country from Perito, Italy aboard the Italian liner SS Ravenna in 1903. His father Carlo had preceded the family coming to America in 1900 aboard the SS Christiania to pave the way for his family's arrival. The family lived first on First Street and then at 275 Varick Street in Jersey City's Downtown Section. In America the family grew to include John (1897-1972), Frank (1899-1972),Dora (1904-1981) George (1906-1981), Peter (1908-2001) and Anthony (1910-1986).

In 1916 he began working at the Jersey City Printing Company where he would work until his death in 1972. He married Angelina Apolito on September 10, 1922 at Our lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Soon afterwards Frank, as he was known, bought a house at 136 Broadway in Jersey City's Marion Section. Frank and Angie would have four children: Caroline (1923-1925), Joseph (1925-1987), Francis (1930-2010), and Ann Marie (1932-2008). Together they would give him fifteen grandchildren. In addition to their own children the Barattas cared for several orphaned children over the years, two of whom grew to become members of the family. August Pitarisi (1933-2014) and Thomas Fitzpatrick (1940-2007). His wife Angelina died of cancer in 1953.

Frank and his family were long-time parishoners of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church on Broadway in Jersey City, NJ where he was an usher for Sunday masses. It is where he and Angelina were married in 1922, where they baptized all four of their children, and where their funerals were held in 1972 and 1953 respectively. Frank died from complications stemming from emphysema.
