August Clemens Schwanke was born 22 January 1823 in Bromberg, Posen, Prussia (now part of Poland), and christened 2 feb. 1823. He was the son of citizen Gottlieb Schwanke and his wife, Sophia Charlotte Meyhoffen. August was a shoemaker in Berlin, Germany before coming to America in1850 or 1851. On March 1858 he was married to Eltje Eggen at La Prairie, Illinois. They had a house built in La Prairie and spent their married life there. He had at least one sister, Mrs. Anna Springfield of Berlin, Germany. Possibly had a brother who went to Australia to seek his fortune. August and Eltje also had a son Johan (John) Wilhelm, died 1873; was infant and infant daughter, died 1876 or 1877.
