Enlisted in the 7th U. S. Cavalry on 20 September 1875. At the Battle of the Little Big Horn he was a private in Company I under Myles Keogh. However, that particular day McShane was not with Company I, which saved his life. Each company had designated a few troopers to remain with the pack train to help out. McShane was one of these.
When the pack train arrived at Reno Hill, they dug in with the troopers of Reno, Benteen and Weir where they fought until the battle was over.
