"Eugene Gartland died at his home in San Francisco at the age of 86. Gene was the loving husband of Eileen Rush for 49 years until her death in 1997. Born in San Francisco to Eugene Gartland and Alice O'Connor, he was the brother of the late Patrick Joseph and Maureen Morrison. He attended St. James Grammar School, Bellarmine College Prep. and the California Maritime Academy. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marine in the South Pacific during WWII. After the war, Gene joined the SFPD while earning his B.A. from USF and his Juris Doctorate from the USF School of Law.

In 1953 Gene began practicing law in San Francisco specializing in maritime law. He was the senior partner of Gartland & Tilly. Gene served as General Counsel for the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots from 1978 1982. Appointed to the S.F. Port Commission in 1979 by then Mayor Dianne Feinstein, he served as president of the board from 1981 to 1983 when he was named Port Director and served until his retirement in 1988.

He is survived by his two daughters; 4 grandsons; 3 great-grandchildren and his companion.
