United States Army General. During World War II, he served first as the commanding officer of Combat Command A, 4th Armored Division, then as commanding general of the 20th Armored Division, then finally as commanding general of the 12th Armored Division. After the war, he served as the commander of the 1st Armored Division in Italy and Germany. He also served as the Chief Operations Officer, United States Forces Europe, Director of Intelligence Army Ground Forces and commanding general of the 3rd Armored Division. During the Korean War, he served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for the Far East Command and the commanding general of the XVI Corps. He retired in 1954.
