During the Civil War, Richard served first as a 2nd Lieutenant of Artillery. He later served as a Confederate States Army Engineer with the rank of Major.

His father Charles was a U.S. Navy officer, who during the War commanded several ships. Charles retired as a Rear Admiral in 1868.

Richard married Sallie about 1867. They had three children, all born in Baltimore: Mattie (1868-1932), Sallie (1868-aft. 1909), and Powhatan. He is buried next to his wife and son in his father-in-law's plot.
