Edward was the firstborn child of Joseph and Julia La Ville. His father had immigrated from France about 1842, and his mother had arrived with her family from Switzerland in 1843. The family spoke French.
The family moved from Ohio to Wisconsin, where Edward's siblings were born, and about 1862 they moved to farmland outside of Whitehall, Michigan. Within a year, Edward, his father Peter Joseph, and his baby brother Francis had perished.
The family was devastated, and moved into the town of Whitehall where the 3 older children went to work to support the family, only attending school when there was no work.
At this time it is supposed that Edward, along with his father and baby brother, are buried either on the land that they homesteaded, or in one of the small, now-abandoned cemeteries in the Whitehall area. It is not known whether they died of the same cause or if their deaths were unrelated.
