Velma Caroline Lewis Hansen, 92, believed and lived the words to that song. Velma was born in Paris, Idaho, on Sept. 16, 1919, to Franklin Ralph Lewis and Martha Lucy Kaufman.
Velma loved music. As a child and young adult, her activities centered around the clarinet, violin, piano and her melodic second soprano voice. She was a chorister in many of her church and community programs, including the Singing Mothers. She sang in a quartet and trio all over the Bear Lake Valley for many years as well as an a cappella group, the Chordbusters, in her later years.
Velma met her future husband, Willard H. Hansen, of Pickleville, Utah, when she was 17 and cooking for the "hands" in the hay fields in the Paris Bottoms. Four days after she turned 20 they were married and sealed for time and for eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on Sept. 20, 1939. They were to have been married four days before her birthday but had to postpone the marriage eight days because she had tonsillitis.
Just a few months before her marriage, she and Irene Spencer Wyler started the Paris Ladies Sewing Club. This club existed over 65 years.
Velma joined the DUP in 1978 and was captain several times. She loved this organization. She was also a member of the Paris Literary Club. Velma worked as deputy county clerk from 1965 to 1976. She was also a member of the Business Professional Women organization and served a term as president.
In January 1986, Velma lost her sweetheart to causes related to Alzheimer's disease. In October of 1986, Velma accepted a mission call to Anaheim, Calif., where she served 18 months. This was a highlight of her life. Later she served several years as a temple worker in the Logan LDS Temple.
Velma loved to fish, camp, garden, quilt, crochet, sew and travel. Family camping and Christmas gatherings have gone on for over 40 years now. She traveled to Hawaii, the Holy Land, Greece, Crete, Turkey, Switzerland, France, Austria and all over the Western states.
Velma was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved and lived the gospel. She always loved each of her family members unconditionally.
Velma is survived by her five children, Merlyn (Lloyd, deceased) Painter of Grace, Idaho, Richard (LaRae) Hansen of Pocatello, Idaho, Maxine (Lonnie) Taggart of Grace, Idaho, Reed (Raylene) Hansen of Montpelier, Idaho, and Jane (Douglas) DeSpain of Logan, Utah. She has 24 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Jean Dickson of Salt Lake City, Utah, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Grant, son-in-law and grandson.
The family would like to thank the kitchen, housekeeping and medical staff at the Bear Lake Memorial Skilled Nursing Facility for their care and love of Mom and the rest of us as we waited for Mom to move on and find her departed ones.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, May 30, 2012, in the Paris Ward church in Paris, Idaho. The family will meet friends and family before the services from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sims Funeral Home in Soda Springs. Interment will be in the Paris Cemetery following the services. Services are under the direction of Sims Funeral Home.
