Richard D. Noel beloved husband, father and grandpa of York, and most recently Durham, N.C., passed away May 23, 2012. He was born November 12, 1923, the son of Charles and Ida Noel. In addition to his parents Richard is preceded by his sisters, Doris, Betty and Phyllis and his brothers, Charles, Bob and George.
He spent almost his entire life residing in York where he graduated from William Penn High School. He enlisted in the Navy during the war and spent three years serving as a diesel mechanic on an LST. During and after D-Day the ship made over 50 crossings of the Channel transporting soldiers, tanks, prisoners and equipment to Normandy and London. Returning home he joined the rest of the "greatest generation" as they helped transform our country in the post war years. He owned several service stations before joining the postal service where he worked for 24 years retiring in 1983 as the manager of the West York Branch.
Dick was very active in athletics which included the York White Roses semi-pro football team, Community Basketball League (Noel Brothers) and Sunday School softball and basketball. He was a life long member of Union Lutheran Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, council member and on his beloved choir for over 50 years. He also served his community by his participation in the Boy Scouts, the York Aquatic Club, school tutoring programs and as a Sunday School Basketball/Softball coach.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Norma Jean Noel, daughter Holly of Durham, N.C., son Michael and wife Connie of Raleigh, N.C., son Richard and wife Pam of York, as well as nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed and remembered for his kindness, humility and serving heart.
A visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday June 2, 2012, with a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Union Lutheran Church 408 W. Market St., York, PA 17401. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with Full Military Rites by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the York YMCA 90 N. Newberry St. York PA 17401; or the Union Lutheran organ fund.
