Jimalou Agnew was born in Westminster, South Carolina on March 5, 1911, to James Benson Agnew & Lizzie Sitton. Jimalou was the 2nd of seven children in this union. She graduated from Cardozo High Night School in Washington, D.C. in 1934.
Jimalou married Lemuel Lafayette Whiting on September 4, 1936. After getting married, she worked as a teacher's aid for the Nannie Burroughs School for girls in Washington, D.C. In Washington, D.C., the Whitings lived at 3214 14th Street, NE from 1939 to 1973. The couple moved to their home on Shadetree in Laurel, Maryland in 1974.
Jimalou was very knowledgeable about a wide variety of plant life. She worked as a tour guide at both the National Arboretum and Brookside Gardens and received letters of recommendation from clients about the excellent services she provided.
Mrs. Whiting served as President of the Montpelier Garden Club and was an avid bridge player. She and her husband, Lemuel, hosted many bridge parties at their home in Northeast Washington as well as in Laurel, Maryland.
After the death of her husband and a decline in her health, Jimalou was moved on October 22, 2004 from her home on Shadetree Lane in Laurel to the Morningside House Assisted Living & Retirement facility on Cherry Lane, also in Laurel, Maryland. During the time she lived at Morningside House, Jimalou came to love and enjoy the staff members, especially Lorraine Simpson, Foluso Bakare, Evelyn Sanyeneh, Jeanette Denis and Jo Ann Horan. She was also fond of her Morningside House aides and caregivers, Alma, Kim and Greer. She looked forward to, with excitement and enthusiasm, all the many activities, events and trips that were planned for the residents.
Her husband, Lemuel Whiting, their son, William Whiting, her parents and all of her sibling preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn a devoted adopted daughter and caregiver, Mrs. Ruby Henley, of Laurel, Maryland, a niece, Mrs. Doris Carey of Alexandria, VA, a daughter-in-law, Rose Robinson, of Triangle, VA, a grand-daughter, Cherita Whiting and a grandson, Brandon Whiting of Washington, D.C., and a host of other family and friends.
