Mary Lafayette May, daughter of Asa Thomas May and Mary Caroline Bostwick, was born in what was Polk County, Texas, now San Jacinto County. Her parents had lived in Lowndes County before Asa, a minister, packed them up and moved to Texas where he died of Typhoid Fever in 1850. Mary Bostwick May returned to Lowndes to raise her children. Mary Lafayette May Robinson died from child-bed fever after the birth of her sixth child and fifth daughter, Jesse Belle. Mary and John Robinson were the parents of Cornelius "Neil" (a daughter), Mary Owen, Joseph William, Francis Kathleen, Bessie May, and Jessie Belle Robinson. According to Francis Kathleen Robinson, both her parents were buried in the "family plot" in Mount Gilead Cemetery.
