Son of Elisha Ackerly and Mary Ann Mitchell, husband of Elvenia Horton and father of Mary Sarah, Mariah "Minnie" and Augustus Ludlow "Gus" Ackerly.

In 1865, William Akerly, aged 32, was living in Brookhaven, NY, with wife, Elvenia, aged 27, and children, Mary J. Akerly, aged 8, and Minnie Akerly, aged 4.

William was shown as a farmer in Brookhaven in 1880. Living with him were his wife (spelled Evenia), daughter Minny, aged 19, and Gus Ludlow Ackerly, aged 12. They were living next door to Elvenia's parents, Gilbert, a storekeeper, and Sarah Jane Horton.

Thursday, May 28, 1885 - "Captain William N. (J.) Ackerly, of Patchogue, has been declared insane by a commission consisting of Dr. Edward, Wilmot M. Smith, and Edwin Bailey. The unfortunate man's affairs have been placed in the hands of Othniel Smith and Mrs. Ackerly, and he will be lodged in an asylum. The horse and wagon which he lost after disappearing from home have been recovered."

Saturday, June 27, 1885 - "On Tuesday of last week, Hon. John S. Havens, one of the County Superintendents of Poor, conveyed Capt. William Ackerly, of this place, to the State Asylum, at Middletown. There being no reasonable hope of improvement in the Captain's mental health, this step was rendered necessary."

Obituary - Middletown, NY, August 13- Captain William Ackerly, of Patchogue, where the remains were interred, ae 58.

(Note: Middletown State Homeopathic Asylum opened in 1874 and was the first institution of its kind. It closed in 2006.)
