This monument is a cenotaph. He is not buried here. Private Brown was a member of Company D, 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry.

Private Brown was reported wounded and missing by Captain Ely of Janesville, Wisconsin on July 24th, 1861 in his official report of dead, wounded, and missing from the fighting on July 21st, 1861. He apparently died while a prisoner from his wounds and his body was never recovered, most likely buried by Confederate forces. He was 21 years old.
