Janet Elaine Bastian, 89, of Freeport died on Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at Manor Court of Freeport.
Janet was born on July 14, 1922, in Freeport, the daughter of James and Grace (Stevenson) Baxter. On Aug. 24, 1941, Janet and Leonard B. Bastian were married in Kahoka, Mo.

Mrs. Bastian worked for Burgess Battery, Micro Switch, and then Fairbanks-Morse. She also farmed with her husband and family in Florence Township.

She was a 1940 graduate of Freeport High School, a member of Florence Home Bureau, and a 4-H Leader. Mrs. Bastian was a member of First Lutheran Church in Freeport, where she was on the Ladies Society of the Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Bastian lived in Aurelia, Iowa, then Omaha, Neb., before returning to Freeport in 1992. Mrs. Bastian was a member of Rejoice Lutheran in Omaha, Neb., and Bethlehem Lutheran in Cherokee, Iowa. Mrs. Bastian was in the Ladies Circle at all of the churches she attended.

Survivors include her husband, Leonard B. Bastian; two sons, Marek (Judy) Bastian of Shannon and Linden (Deborah) Bastian of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and three daughters, Jalinda Bastian of LaJolla, Calif., Melissa (Arnie) Nebelsick of Naperville, and Janelle (Rick) McLean of Montrose, Calif. Also surviving are four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bastian was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Jack, William, and Robert Baxter; and three sisters, Grace Borchers, Nancy Drye, and Joan Derenski.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, at First Lutheran Church, with Rev. Keith Johnson officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. There will also be a visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service Friday morning at First Lutheran. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

A memorial fund has been established for First Lutheran Church and FHN Foundation in Janet's memory.
