Marie E. McCarthy, a pioneering member at St. Rita's Catholic Church who earned the nickname "Mrs. St. Rita" for her dedication to the church, died Friday at Nazareth Retirement Home. She was 95.

Mrs. McCarthy and her husband, Daniel, came to San Diego from Minnesota in 1921 and lived in a tent until they built a home in East San Diego. The couple ran a grocery store in National City during the 1940's and helped found the original St. Rita's Catholic Church building on Churchward Street 50 years ago.

Mrs. McCarthy was active in the American Red Cross, the United Service Organizations, the Legion of Mary and the Altar Society. "She was a cornerstone of St. Rita's Church," said her niece, Sister Patricia Hanson.

She is survived by a son, Robert, of New York; a brother, Brother Virgil Evers of Napa; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1963.

A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the church, 5124 Churchward St., followed by a Mass at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
