2nd Lieutenant Elhannan M. Botkin, Company K, 7th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. Botkin enlisted as private on August 26, 1861 at Camp Wildcat and rose through the ranks. He was commissioned 2nd lieutenant dating to February 13, 1863. Botkin requested and received a 30-day absence on August 1, 1863 while at Vicksburg. In Lexington on August 21, he was examined by a surgeon who declared him unfit for duty due to ulcerated intestines and chronic diarrhea--for the six previous weeks; the surgeon recommended an additional 20 days leave. Botkin died at home in Laurel County, Kentucky on September 7, 1863.
