AUGUSTA - Hester Louise (Barrett) Nichols, 90, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2012, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Hester was born in Canaan on the family farm on Jan. 21, 1922, to Henry C. Barrett and Agnes Louise (Crocket) Barrett. Hester was one of seven children born to Henry and Louise. She graduated from Cony High School in 1940.
On Sept. 15, 1942, she married the love of her life, Calvin, of Augusta. The Rev. Thomas O'Dowd performed the ceremony in the presence of Clarence "Nick" Nichols and Gloria Cyr, together with many of their family and friends. After a very brief honeymoon, Cal was deployed to North Africa to serve his country for the next two years. While her new groom was gone, Hester was employed by the Internal Revenue Service in Augusta.
Hester was extremely proud of her two sons and grandson and their accomplishments and always felt a sense of community.

Once her husband retired and they became empty nesters, she became more involved with her extended family in the community. Hester never acted her age, and that was a good thing. In her mature years, she constantly and without reservation was on the move, from visiting one of her best friends, Evelyn, at the Maine Veterans' Home, to grocery shopping for one of her neighbors, to visiting a friend at St. Mark's Home for Women. She enjoyed meeting with "the girls" once a week for coffee to get caught up on the neighborhood news. She was an outstanding teacher of life skills and sacrifice, and she made sure that her children knew, as they grew up, the meaning of "paying it forward" before it was trendy to do so. She was a member of St. Mary's Parish and always supported her church and its mission and activities in any way she could.

Hester is survived by her husband of 69 years, Col. Calvin E. Nichols, (U.S. Army, retired), of Augusta; two sons, Michael E. Nichols, of Augusta, and Daniel A. Nichols and wife Barbara, of Augusta; one grandson, Daniel T. M. Nichols, of Augusta; one brother, Robert Barrett, of Sidney; one sister-in-law, Patricia Sorne, and husband Richard; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her other siblings.
Committal prayers will follow in the chapel at Maine Veteran' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. (Morning Sentinel 5/23/2012)
