Susanna (q.v. Susannah, Susan) Morton, dau. of Joshua Morton and Sarah Cushman, b. of record Dec. 6, 1781 at Middleboro, Mass. She "officially" d. of paralysis July 20, 1860 at New Bedford, Mass., "age 78y. 7mos." (Mass. Vital Records, 1841-1910, vol. 139, p. 98), although her gravestone says she d. July the 21st. In her birth record she is called Susanna and in her death record as "Susan M. Ellis." Susanna is buried next to her first husband, Freeman Barrows, with reference only to her first husband versus her second husband of 32 years, Capt. Southworth Ellis.

Susanna was a descendant of at least three sets of 1620 Mayflower passengers: Isaac Allerton and his 1st wife Mary Norris, Stephen Hopkins, and Richard Warren.

On Mar. 31, 1805 of record at Middleboro, Mass., Susanna m. Freeman Barrows, s. of Nathaniel Barrows and Hannah Jones, b. of record Mar. 22, 1783 at Middleboro, Mass. He d. intestate and of consumption Mar. 18, 1813 at Middleboro and is interred at the "Old Cemetery on the Green" at Middleboro. They had the following four children recorded in the Middleboro Vital Records, the 1st and 4th child stated as b. at Middleboro, the other two at New Bedford, Mass.:

• i. Elias Morton Barrows, b. Jan. 11, 1806 at Middleboro, d. in infancy Mar. 30, 1806.

• ii. Sarah Ann Barrows, b. May 23, 1808 at New Bedford, d. Sept. 13, 1847 of typhus at Wrentham, Mass.; m. by an intent pub. Aug. 5, 1843 at New Bedford, Mass. as his 2nd of three wives, Fisher Messenger, s. of Capt. George Whitefield Messenger and Polly Fisher, b. Apr. 2, 1806 at Wrentham, Mass. One known child of the marriage.

• iii. John Newton Barrows, b. Oct. 17, 1810 at New Bedford where he d. Mar. 15, 1884; m. 1) by an intent pub. June 19, 1835 at New Bedford, Deborah Cory Bly, who d. May 27, 1843 at New Bedford; m. 2) Sept. 17, 1848 at Raynham, Mass., Sarah Maria Deane, dau. of Daniel Deane and Nancy Andrews. She d. Apr. 27, 1914 at New Bedford. At least five children of the family.

• iv. Freeman Barrows, Jr., b. Mar. 19, 1813 at Middleboro, d. Aug. 23, 1861 at Papinville, Bates County, MO; m. Aug. 23, 1842 at Balltown, Bates County, MO, Asenath Colt Vaill, dau. of Rev. William Fowler Vaill and Asenath Selden, b. Jan. 5, 1822 at Union Mission to the Osage Indians southeast of present-day Chouteau, Mayes County, OK. She never remarried and d. Jan. 28, 1908 at Rich Hill, MO. Nine children of the family.

On Apr. 10, 1828 at Middleboro, the widow Susanna (Morton) Barrows m. as his 2nd wife, Capt. Southworth Ellis, s. of Thomas Ellis and Ruth Thomas, b. Feb. 18, 1769 at Middleboro. He d. testate Dec. 15, 1840 at Middleboro. There were no children of this marriage. In Capt. Ellis' will she is called "Susan."
