Thomas Jefferson Lossing was the seventh child of Henry George Lossing and Martha Nichols.

Thomas enlisted in Company M, 8th Michigan Calvary Regiment, on April 14, 1863 in Batavia, Michigan. He was taken prisoner at Henryville, Tennessee on November 23, 1864 and discharged on June 13, 1865 at Camp Chase, Ohio.

On April 26, 1867 in St. Clair County, Michigan, Thomas married Abigail 'Abby' Bentley. Thomas and Abby had children: Emma and Florence. Thomas married a second time, on September 29, 1895 in Burlington, Michigan, to Jane Barnum. Thomas and Jane had no children.
